HISTORY

Madina Masjid, The Jamiatul Muslemin of Toronto (JMT) was founded in early 1970’s by Muslim immigrants arrived from different part of the world and settled in the heart of the City of Toronto; one of the biggest cities in Canada. Since there was only one established Masjid in the West end of the City, it made it hard for many Muslims from the center of Toronto to attend prayers on daily basis. This small – but steadily increasing group established a small prayer area to accommodate about fifty congregators. They relied heavily on small rented places for prayers and other Islamic obligations. As the population grew, the need to have a large permanent location was realized.

In year 1984, the JMT made a courageous move and bought a building for $750,000. The required fund was collected within the community and without outside help. With hard work and determination they succeeded in paying off the entire debt within a short period of time, and established the largest Masjid in the heart of City of Toronto. Since this aged building was originally designated and designed for Christian faith church, it required some modification and renovation.

In year 1991, the JMT undertook a renovation project to modify some areas of the building to create proper ablution and washrooms facilities, proper funeral and burial preparation facilities etc. Again the total cost of this project was collected and paid by the local community Alhamdulillah.

In year 1992, the JMT successfully negotiated a unique contract with The Pine Ridge Memorial Gardens, for an exclusive burial land for Muslims called ‘MUSLIM GARDEN’. This is the first of its kind in whole Toronto. Once again the total cost was absorbed fully by the local Muslim community of Toronto and vicinity Alhamdulillah.
Besides having above services, Madina Masjid also provided part time Islamic studies to the children of the area. The number of children increased and we were unable to accommodate and facilitate for rising number of children enrolling. The management decided to create an extra space for this.

In year 1996, Madina Masjid undertook a project to build four stories building adjacent to the main prayer hall for Islamic school. This project cost us $800,000. to complete. Total cost was funded by local Muslim population.

Expansion & Upgrading Facilities

Madinah Masjid provides all the above facilities within a building that is over 70 years old. There is a great need to upgrade this building. The main prayer hall building has deteriorated. The roof is leaking, washroom and ablution facilities have run down due to the heavy usage. The entrance has totally run down as well. Also number of washrooms and ablution facilities have become very tight and need upgrade and expansion. We need to install an elevator to serve and accommodate our handicapped and elderly brothers and sisters. Currently we don’t have designated prayer area for our sisters. This new project will InshaAllah create exclusively separate area for our sisters. The main prayer hall needs to be expanded to accommodate rapidly growing Muslim population in Toronto

The management of Madinah Masjid has deliberated for several years to choose a design that will help fill most if not all the needs of the community. In addition to all this there is a need to give the building an Islamic look. This will greatly help the image of Madinah Masjid,

To fulfill our community’s growing needs, we have initiated plan for expansion and total renovation of the building. These will create a great impression for all community in surrounding area and community of greater Toronto at large.

The outline for the proposed plans are:

  • A newly expanded and renovated over 25,000 sq ft building
  • Prayer facility for over 3500 congregators with added balcony on the main prayer hall
  • Islamic School which will now accommodate close to 500 children
  • New Washroom and ablution facility which will increase number of washroom from current 12 to 27 and ablution from current 21 to 35
  • New totally separate prayer facilities for our sisters which will have space for over 300 sisters
  • New elevator for our disabled and elders.
  • And most of all, it will give Islamic look to the building with added Minaret and a Dome.
