Position:       EAST TORONTO YOUTH OUTREACH WORKER - CONTRACT

 

The “East York Strategy: Youth Action Plan for Change” project is being implemented by a partnership of the East York Strategy coalition of Christian churches, the Jamiatul Muslemin of Toronto (Madina Mosque), and Eastview (Toronto) Boys and Girls Club. The project will work with youth to conduct outreach and needs assessment in order to develop programming and services in East York, develop one youth drop-in program in East York, and continue to develop our partnership with youth involvement. This project is the early phase of a larger vision for youth in East York.
 
We are seeking a highly skilled, motivated, youth focused, and innovative team member to develop and implement new youth services in East York.

Primary Function: Reporting to the Eastview’s Program Director, the Youth Outreach Worker will be responsible for the planning, promotion, delivery and evaluation of Boys and Girls Club social recreation and leadership programs for youth ages 11-17 years of age in a satellite location within East York, ensuring the safety and healthy development (social, emotional, mental, spiritual and physical) of youth.  

Major Duties:

  • Engage stakeholders (including residents/youth) in the identification of needs/gaps pertaining to marginalized youth 11-17 years of age and the development of resources to address gaps.
  • Develop, plan, implement and evaluate quality after school, evening, and summer programs (e.g. leadership development, life skills, educational/tutoring, creative arts, sports and recreation) for youth ages 11-17 years.
  • Outreach to places where youth frequent (i.e. internet cafes, shelters, malls, clubs, schools, agencies, faith organizations) to promote project and services.
  • Develop appropriate promotional materials for programs offered.
  • Provide information, referral and informal supportive counselling as feasible.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate youth participants, volunteers, part-time/seasonal staff and placement students to ensure provision of youth-led services in various satellite sites.
  • Maintain accurate program area statistical records, and submit program plans, activity proposals and reports as requested.
  • Recommend appropriate supplies and services based on program plans and budget.
  • Ensure safety and well being of participants, document, and report all incidents involving staff, volunteers/placement students or participants immediately according to legislative and agency requirements.
  • Support the development and initiatives of the youth advisory committee.
  • Participate in Partners Steering Committee meetings and youth advisory committee meetings.

 

Qualifications:
 
·         Completion of a degree or diploma in one of the areas of child/youth work, social services/social work, recreation, pastoral outreach or equivalent education/training in related field from a recognized university, college, or Bible/Islamic school.

·         3 to 5 years progressive experience in the development, promotion, delivery of social-recreational, leadership and life skills development and homework help programs for youth from socio-economically and culturally diverse communities.

·         Demonstrated ability to develop, plan, implement and evaluate quality programs.

·         Express a personal knowledge and commitment to his/her faith belief, and demonstrate understanding and sensitivity of diverse faith traditions (particularly Muslim and Christian).

·         Well developed knowledge of healthy child development principles, conflict resolution processes and community development.

·         Experience and training in supervision, performance management and evaluation of staff/students/volunteers.

·         Knowledge and/or training in conflict resolution, faith and spirituality based service delivery, anti-racism/harassment, health and safety.

·         Flexible and creative team player, able to work in a self-directed and independent manner.

·         Current First Aid and CPR certificate.

·         Ability to travel within the program’s boundaries.

·         A relevant second language (e.g. South Asian languages, Arabic) and PRO High Five certification are assets.

 

 

Type of Position:    25-35 hours per week Contract till December 31, 2010 (renewal expected with continued                              funding)       

Hourly Rate:                   $18.59/hr (under review)
